Major or Minor in Spanish at the U

If you took the AP Spanish Exam and 1-3 Bridge program Spanish courses in high school, you are well on your way to finishing a major or minor in Spanish. The Spanish major and minor are already short and flexible compared to other majors and minors at the U. Many students choose to double major in Spanish and another field!

Major in Spanish at the U

A Spanish major at the U requires:

• WLC 2010 or 2020
• (SPAN 3020 and 3040) or (SPAN 3060) (after completing the lower-division Spanish classes 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020)
• SPAN 3070, 4550/4560, 4620, 4630
• 5 elective courses
• WLC Signature Practicum Experience

 

Bridge students have a leg up! 

• Bridge students who received a score of 3 or 4 on the AP Spanish Exam taken prior to starting Bridge classes may register directly for SPAN 3040 without having to take SPAN 3020, any of the lower-division Spanish courses, or another placement test. 
• Bridge students who received a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Exam taken prior to starting Bridge classes may register directly for SPAN 3060 without having to take any of the lower-division Spanish courses or another placement test.
• Bridge students who are heritage speakers of Spanish may register directly for SPAN 3060 without having to take any of the lower-division Spanish courses or another placement test, regardless of their AP Spanish Exam score. 
• Bridge students who took 1, 2, or 3 Bridge courses in high school may count those courses toward the elective courses requirement (and therefore have just 2, 3, or 4 elective courses left).

 

Minor in Spanish at the U

A Spanish minor at the U requires:

• (SPAN 3020 and 3040) or SPAN 3060 (after completing the lower-division Spanish classes 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020)
• SPAN 3070
• SPAN 4550 or 4560
• 3 elective courses

 

Bridge students have a leg up!

• Bridge students who received a score of 3 or 4 on the AP Spanish Exam taken prior to starting Bridge classes may register directly for SPAN 3040 without having to take SPAN 3020, any of the lower-division Spanish courses, or another placement test. 
• Bridge students who received a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Exam taken prior to starting Bridge classes may register directly for SPAN 3060 without having to take any of the lower-division Spanish courses or another placement test.
• Bridge students who are heritage speakers of Spanish may register directly for SPAN 3060 without having to take any of the lower-division Spanish courses or another placement test, regardless of their AP Spanish Exam score. 
• Bridge students who took 1, 2, or 3 Bridge courses in high school may count those courses toward the elective courses requirement (and therefore have 0, 1, or 2 elective courses left).

Financial Aid & Scholarships

• Merit scholarships available for incoming freshmen who complete a U of U admissions application by the priority deadline
• Complete the FAFSA for need-based scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study jobs
• The Fishburn, WLC Departmental, and WLC Learning Abroad Scholarships are only available to WLC majors and students on WLC study abroad programs

Purchase Extra Credits toward your U of U Degree

All students who complete at least 1 Bridge course in high school and pass with a B- or better are eligible for 16 credits of lower division language credit. (This is equivalent to the courses and levels they have tested out of at the university level: SPAN 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020; 4 credits each.)

• Students who received a 5 on the AP exam prior to taking their Bridge course(s) will automatically receive 16 credits on their student record equivalent to the four 4-credit courses they have tested out of (1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020). These students cannot purchase any extra credits toward their U of U degree, since the maximum number of lower-division credits for any language is 16.

 

• Students who received a 4 on the AP exam prior to taking their Bridge course(s) will automatically receive 12 credits to their student record equivalent to the three 4-credit courses they have tested out of (1010, 1020, and 2010). If these students pass at least 1 Bridge course in high school with a B- or better, they are eligible to purchase the remaining 4 credits (for $40/credit) in the sequence by setting up an appointment for "Purchasing Language Credits" with a WLC Academic Advisor here: https://languages.utah.edu/advising.php.

 

• Students who received a 3 on the AP exam prior to taking their Bridge course(s) will automatically receive 8 credits to their student record equivalent to the two 4-credit courses they have tested out of (1010 and 1020). If a student passes at least 1 Bridge course in high school with a B- or better, they are eligible to purchase the remaining 8 credits (for $40/credit) in the sequence by setting up an appointment for "Purchasing Language Credits" with a WLC Academic Advisor here: https://languages.utah.edu/advising.php.
